Treatment Bias
Over-Reliance on CBT
Overview.
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, while evidence-based for certain conditions, is often positioned as the default or only treatment for anxiety. CBT focuses primarily on thoughts and behaviors but may not adequately address trauma, somatic symptoms, spiritual dimensions, or the body-based nature of anxiety. Many people don't respond to CBT or need complementary approaches. Cultural factors may make CBT's individualistic framework less effective for collectivist communities.
Challenge.
People who don't respond to CBT may feel they've "failed" at therapy or that nothing can help them, leading to discontinuation of care and hopelessness about recovery.
